Manchester Students Visit Hamilton Sundstrand, a Unit of United Technologies Corporation

Students from Manchester Community College and the Greatpath Magnet School visited Hamilton Sunstrand's Space, Land and Sea Business in Windsor Locks recently, following their teacher's externship there.

Externships

Eight teachers have been selected to participate in the Center's summer externship program. These teachers will spend four weeks in industry learning about the latest technologies and workplace practices. They will then bring this information back into their classrooms as part of their curriculum. Returning and new teachers participating in the summer of 2007 include:

Charles Haynes, CAD/Drafting, Emmett O'Brien Tech
John Hoyle, Drafting, Cheney Tech
Fred Huhn, Drafting, Cheney Tech
Rebecca Marra, Drafting, Platt Tech
Ismail Orabi, Mechanical Engineering, University of New Haven
William Trapp, Business Math, Cheney Tech
Dave Salonia, Project Lead the Way, Berlin High School
Angelo Velez, Drafting, Henry Abbott Tech

In addition to working at sponsor companies, the teachers will be asked to create a work-based learning project to be integrated into their curriculum so that students can benefit from what they learned on the job. As part of the Center grant, they will also be called upon to meet as a team to discuss ways they can collaborate, make presentations about their externship experience, and will be asked to participate in workshops sponsored by the Center, all designed to enhance their understanding of manufacturing practices in the new workplace.

Companies and organizations who will be acting as hosts for this summer's program include:

Covidien (formerly US Surgical)
Baldwin Pergolas
Wiremold
The Pennsylvania Globe Gaslight Company
Trumpf, Inc.
Pratt & Whitney, United Technologies
BF Goodrich

As the primary business partner of the Center, the Connecticut Business and Industry Association is administering the program. View the results of a similar CBIA NSF externship program here.
