The National Center for Next Generation Manufacturing (NCNGM) participated in the annual National Science Foundation Advanced Technological Education Principal Investigators Conference in Washington, D.C. This event brings together educators and professionals who have received an NSF ATE (Project

or Center) Grant dedicated to enhancing technological education and workforce development nationwide. This year, the NCNGM joined other leading organizations in the field at the innovative Convergence Lab, a space designed for collaboration and the exchange of ideas. Attendees participated in a range of informative sessions designed to educate them on topics related to advanced manufacturing and technological education.

The Convergence Lab included the NCNGM or the National Center for Next Generation Manufacturing, InnovATEBIO or the National Biotechnology Center, NCyTE or the National Cybersecurity Training and Education Center, Weld-Ed or the National Center for Welding Education and Training, NAAIC or the National Applied Artificial Intelligence Consortium, and RECITE or the Resource Collaborative for Immersive Technologies.

The Convergence Lab became a bustling hub where experts shared insights on cutting-edge advancements in manufacturing technologies, sustainable practices, and the integration of hands-on approaches to better prepare students for the changing job market. For example, the Recite demonstration of VR/XR provided valuable insights for educators interested in incorporating these technologies into their curriculum.

Workshops and panel discussions emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and the need for educational institutions to update their curricula to incorporate emerging technologies transforming technical workforce education.

In addition to the educational sessions, a significant highlight of the conference was the exclusive Student Award Breakfast, where students from NCNGM partner community colleges were honored for their achievements and contributions to the field. This breakfast not only celebrated the students' hard work and dedication but also gave them a unique opportunity to network with industry leaders and educators. The recognition they received inspired both the awardees and their peers, highlighting the importance of combining practical experience with academic excellence in shaping the future skilled technician workforce.

The conference concluded with a thought-provoking keynote address during the final plenary meeting. The keynote speaker, Shawn DuBravac, a renowned expert in advanced digital technologies, discussed the crucial role of automation and artificial intelligence in redefining the future workforce. DuBravac emphasized how these technologies are enhancing productivity and efficiency in manufacturing processes while creating new job opportunities that require different skills. The discussion highlighted the pressing need for educational institutions to adapt to technological advancements, ensuring that students are equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in an increasingly automated environment.
